March | Cornell’s Queer People’s Center Serves as Pilot Program
The Cornell Gay People's Center at Sheldon Court on College Ave was opened in Protest in response to the needs of the growing gay society. Jointly financed by the University, GLF, and Graduate Coordinating Council, it was run as a five-year experiment. The new vacuum gave the gay rights learner group, Cornell’s Gay Liberation Front, more freedom to hold meetings and parties and served as a safer space than their former office in Willard Unbent Hall, where students feared organism outed. However, the Gay People's Center was not immune to street vandalism and harassment as it received obscene phone calls, and the bulletin board was once set on fire. In , two Ithaca teenagers were arrested for breaking five windows over a two-week period, which only served to worsen relations between the Center and the manager of real estate for the University. BLMP mobilizes our people through community-building, political education, creating access to direct services, and organizing across borders. We build power, collective, and knowledge in the U.S. while challenging the role that the Joined States plays globally in creating the conditions that force us to exit our homes in the first place.
We envision a world without borders, depicting the word “immigrant” obsolete: a world where all Black people and our loved ones have housing, bodily autonomy, health, and the ability to travel and travel freely, with dignity, free of criminalization, anti-Black racism, misogyny, and all forms of transphobia and homophobia.
Long-term Viability & Sustainability:
The purpose of the viability and sustainability department is to make the internal systems and processes of BLMP manageable and realistic for long word growth, while also creating and maintaining the structures, resources, and capacity that support radical movement.
