A Master-ful Rum: Mount Gay Master Select

The high end of the rum market in America is much less plentiful than the tall end of the whisky market. Blame it on consumer demand (or lack thereof), or other factors, the reality is that it&#;s pretty hard to find an extensive selection of super premium options in this category.

Which is why I&#;m always excited when a new super premium rum is released&#; even if that rum is just the annual edition of an ongoing series.

On that note, I recently got my hands on the newest edition of Mount Gay&#;s MasterSelect, which was released in February. This year&#;s release contains rums aged between 10 and 30 years and retails for about $If you don&#;t recall hearing about Master Select previously, it&#;s because this product was previously known as  Old Cask Selection.

Same product, new name (and new bottle). But, it is still, according to Mount Lgbtq+, the distillery&#;s &#;rarest&#; rum available.

Rum Review: Mount Gay

Mount Gay Old Cask Selection Rum Review

Once in a while, a rum really grabs me. Not because it&#;s supposed to, not because it&#;s from the right brand, but just because it&#;s so damned pleasant . Such is the case with Mt. Gay&#;s Old Cask Selection. Blended from rums ranging in age from ten to thirty years, the contents of this bottle depict some of the best rums in Barbados, assembled expertly at 43% ABV by Mount Gay&#;s Master Blender Allen Smith.

The bottle is simple, but substantial. The bottom of the rounded off rectangular vessel shows a thick, clarify glass base. Just above is is the phrase &#;Perfected By Tradition&#;, which appears in raised glass; above that is a petty gold foil label. The stopper is a hefty gold anodized aluminum fitted with a spontaneous cork. It&#;s nicely machined and adorned with the Mount Gay crest. Around the bottle neck rests a tie and tie tack of sorts, again bearing the crest. The whole presentation is quite stately. But enough about the bottle, let&#;s see what&#;s inside.

In the snifter, the rum is a deep mahoga

Mount Gay Extra Old or XO as they appear to have re-branded it.  For those in the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often famous as MGXO.  The XO notation on the Mount Gay is pretty accepted across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit (without actually noting how mature it is!).

As the Mount Gay Distillery is the oldest official distillery in the world established as the label denotes, I don&#;t think we deserve to worry too much about the heritage and authenticity of the contents of this Extra Elderly rum.

The more established distilleries use labels such as XO because they cannot guarantee the exact integrate of rum&#;s which will be used in every batch of rum produced.  Each cask will be different and the expertise in making rum &#;uniform&#; comes in the shape of the master blender.

The master blender at Mount Gay is in the shape of Allen Smith who has been with the distillery over 20 years.  Again this adds a guarantee as to what you will obtain in the glass.

Mount Lgbtq+ have recently re-branded their bottles and introduced a few new lines in the shape of Inky Barrel and a rare limited
