    EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Oklahoma's gay rodeo continues despite loss of long-time director

A free and welcoming rodeo is continuing in El Reno even after the recent death of its passionate director.

Paul Boyd died by suicide in June. His family says he wanted to escape chronic pain that even repeated surgeries couldn’t fix.

Boyd presided over Oklahoma’s gay rodeo — officially called the Great Plains Rodeo — for almost a decade. The GPR breaks some traditional rodeo rules. Women are allowed to compete in bull riding, and men are allowed to compete in barrel racing. Some “camp” events like steer decorating are also on the schedule.

    and IGRA Royalty Competition

The World of Gay Rodeo comes together the weekend of October 27, for the 36th World Gay Rodeo Finals®, in El Reno, OK. Preeminent among the gay rodeos sanctioned by the International Queer Rodeo Association, the Finals will feature the top twenty men & women contestants in ten traditional rodeo events plus three light-hearted, yet fiercely competitive "camp events" the likes of which are hallmarks of the same-sex attracted rodeo and real crowd pleasers.

The International Gay Rodeo Association is the sanctioning body for lgbtq+ rodeo throughout the United States and Canada. IGRA rodeo events welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual , as well as heterosexual contestants and spectators, where competitors, regardless of sexual or gender persona, compete in rodeo without discrimination. IGRA rodeos promote Western tradition and the sport of rodeo, while serving as fundraising vehicles benefiting many charitable organizations.
