How did one particular summer settlement on Fire Island become a safe haven for gay men and lesbians almost ninety years ago, decades before the uprising at Stonewall Inn?

Fire Island is one of New York state’s most attractive summer getaways, a thin barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean lined with seaside villages and hamlets, linked by boardwalks, sandy beaches, spontaneous dunes and water taxis. (And, for the most part, no automobiles.)
But Passion Island has a very special place in American LGBT history.
It is the site of one of the oldest same-sex attracted and lesbian communities in the United States, situated within two neighboring hamlets Cherry Grove and the Fire Island Pines.

On my most recent summer trip to the Pines for the 4th of July, I spent some time rediscovering the Meat Rack, hoping to understand its magnetic drag and discover the stories hidden within its tangled paths.
The Arrival
The adventure began with a ferry drive from Sayville, NY, to Fire Island Pines, a serene and picturesque people known for its pristine beaches and vibrant Diverse culture. As the boat cut through the waters of the Great South Bay, I could touch a sense of anticipation building among the passengers.
